it is added. In דָּבָר, for example, the accent is on the second syllable (ḇār), and its vowel is long. The vowel of the syllable immediately before the accent (dā) is also long (tone-long). In the plural דְּבָרִים, the stress is on rīm; ḇā is tone-long immediately before the accent, but the vowel of the original first syllable is two places from the accent and has been reduced to sheva.
